Automotive SPICE is getting hot in Asia and few days ago we had a pleasure to set two days training about "Automotive SPICE for managers" in PIA - Process Improvement Asia, delivered by Volker Lehmann.

The Volker's SPICE knowledge is impressive and he is a very brilliant person, therefore I asked him to send a very brief explanation for Automotive SPICE and he wrote me this amazing and simple article which I would like to share with you.

"Projects in the automotive industry are getting more complex. Over the last years, the focus changed from mechanical challenges to software in the car, the number of electronic steering units (ECU) is increasing and functionality will get more and more challenging. More and more projects are executed in parallel. The life cycle of models is growing shorter and shorter, there is an increase in the number of variations available, and the expectations of the customer in terms of comfort, safety and infotainment are increasing: all these factors force the automobile industry to change its development process.

In this scenario, you need to have a stable approach to develop products. You should ensure to not make errors twice and to avoid inefficient work. And finally, having stable and provable processes will provide confidence in your abilities and in your work to the customer.

All this could be supported with an internationally accepted process model developed by experts. Automotive SPICE® is such a model, which defines processes and best practices for software and software based system development especially for the automotive industry. With this model you have a guideline how to organize your project work and what to do, to make sure that keep your projects manageable. The VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie – Association Of Automotive Industry) agreed to set Automotive SPICE® as the standard process model, which is required for suppliers to follow. If you want to deal with customers organized within the VDA you should implement Automotive SPICE® in your development organization. This will be a win-win situation: The customer is satisfied with your products and you will be able to work more stable and efficient."
